Presentation Title:

A cross-sectional study on the cut-off birthweight of neonates associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality on singleton, cephalic, term pregnancy at Tertiary Government Hospital in the Philippines

Abstract

Normal development of a fetus should be in harmony between maternal and fetal compartments. Disturbance in the normal fetal growth will lead to the development of either intrauterine growth restriction or macrosomia, both associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality.

Objectives of the study were to determine the cut-off birth weight of neonates associated with increased maternal morbidity and to determine the cut-off birth weight of neonates associated with increased neonatal morbidity and mortality. This was a restrospective, cross-sectional study which include parturients, admitted from January to July 2014 at the East Avenue Medical Center. A total of 3,100 charts were reviewed and 2, 374 were included in the study. The inclusion criteria were patients aged 15-46 years old, gravida 1 to 5, term gestation at 37 to 41 6/7 weeks AOG, singleton and cephalic pregnancies without medical complications.

This study showed the cut-off birthweight of neonates with respect to the different maternal morbidity was 2544 grams. Neonates who weighed more than 2544 grams were associated with poor maternal outcome such as those who sustained third or fourth degree vaginal lacerations, transient uterine atony and who had blood transfusion. One the other hand, the cut-off birthweight of neonates associated with neonatal morbidity and mortality was 2992.5 grams. Neonates who weighed more than 2992.5 grams were associated with poor neonatal outcome such as neonates admitted at neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), neonatal sepsis and morbidity.
