Presentation Title:

Morphological and histopathological examination of placenta in normal and FGR pregnancy and its correlation with clinical outcome

Abstract

Purpose: To study the morphological and histopathological aspects of placenta in normal pregnancies and compare it with pregnancy complicated with FGR fetus and correlated with clinical outcome.

Methods: The study included 100 pregnant women between age group 20-35 years in low risk group and 100 women with pregnancies complicated with FGR fetus. The placentae of both group were subjected to detailed morphological examination. The placentae from both group were also submitted for histopathological evaluation. Clinical outcome was noted by looking for neonatal outcome and maternal outcome.

Results: All results were compiled and subjected to statistical analysis.

P value  was calculated results were also compared with other similar studies  and neonatal and maternal outcome were also followed up. Majority of placentae in women with fetal growth restriction had placental weight <400 gms. The microscopic lesions found with FGR were in the form of infarctions, decreased vascularity, thickening of vessel wall and syncitial knots

Conclusion: Placentae should be examined carefully after delivery. It gives a good idea if the placenta was healthy or pathological.
