Robotic surgery has emerged as an important advancement in the management of selected gynaecological cancers, including cancers of the uterus, cervix and ovaries. It is a form of minimally invasive surgery in which the surgeon controls robotic instruments through a computer-assisted system (called console). The technology provides a magnified three-dimensional view and allows precise movement of instruments, which can be especially useful when operating in the confined spaces of the pelvis (motion scaling, intuitive movements).

In appropriately selected patients, robotic surgery may help perform procedures such as hysterectomy, lymph-node assessment and staging of certain cancers. Compared with traditional open surgery, it is generally associated with smaller incisions, less blood loss, reduced postoperative pain and a shorter hospital stay. Many patients may also return to normal daily activities sooner. The enhanced vision and instrument flexibility may support accurate dissection and preservation of important surrounding structures.

However, robotic surgery is not suitable for every patient or every stage of cancer. Tumor size, extent of disease, previous treatments and the patient’s overall health must be carefully considered. In some advanced cancers, open surgery or other treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be more appropriate. Robotic procedures are also costly and require specialized equipment and trained surgical teams.

Importantly, the success of cancer surgery depends not only on technology but also on proper patient selection and the experience of the multidisciplinary cancer team. Overall, robotic surgery offers a valuable minimally invasive option in modern Gynecological oncology and can improve surgical recovery while maintaining appropriate oncological care for many women.
